Samaritans Celebrates 40 Years

Ms JENNY AITCHISON (Maitland—Minister for Regional Transport and Roads)—Congratulations to Samaritans on celebrating an incredible 40 years of dedicated service to our local community. Founded by the Anglican Diocese of Newcastle in 1984, Samaritans has grown to become a cornerstone of support for those in need across the Hunter, Lake Macquarie, Central Coast, and Mid North Coast. For four decades, Samaritans has expanded its reach to offer more than 100 programs and initiatives, touching countless lives through compassionate care and practical assistance. Their commitment to providing emergency relief, safe refuge for those fleeing domestic violence, student accommodation for vulnerable youth, and support for families in crisis has made a profound impact on our community. The organisation's six Emergency Relief Centres have been at the forefront of crisis support, assisting over 113,000 cases in the past 15 years. This remarkable achievement underscores the vital role Samaritans plays in our region's social fabric. As Samaritans launches its annual Christmas Appeal, I recognise the increasing demand for their services and the ongoing generosity of our community. I commend Samaritans for their unwavering dedication to supporting those in need and congratulate them on 40 years of making a difference in the lives of local families and individuals.
