MATTHEW WATSON
Ms JENNY AITCHISON (Maitland—Minister for Regional Transport and Roads)—Congratulations to Matthew Watson for East Maitland who took out the 2023 Pitcher Partners Maitland Art Prize "Section A" in February of this year. Matthew secured a $5,000 prize with his Painting 'Got the Blues', a portrait of music legend Bob Dylan. Matthew initially created the work as a personal challenge at the encouragement of his wife Brooke, and the win was a very unexpected surprise for the former TAFE teacher and signwriter. There were 83 entries to the competition this year, which were judged by Trevor Weekes, a University of Newcastle lecturer in natural history illustration. The Maitland Art Prize was established in 1957 through joint efforts of the Hunter River Agriculture and Horticultural Association, Maitland City Council and the Maitland Branch of the Art Council. Freeman of the City Mrs Margaret Sivyer OAM was a major driver of the award, before her retirement, It is wonderful to see the return of the Maitland Art Prize after Covid, along with the Maitland Show. The Prize provides an important avenue for artists to showcase their artworks locally. Thanks to all the wonderful sponsors and volunteers for bringing it back to life!
