MEDIA RELEASE - VALE FIONA RICHARDSON

24 August 2017

It is with genuine sadness that we note the passing of the Hon. Fiona Richardson MP, Australia's first Minister for the Prevention of Family Violence.

A Member of the Victorian Parliament since 2006, Fiona had a long record of achievements for her state and her community but her most significant achievement was the establishment of the Victorian Royal Commission into Family Violence. It was a comprehensive report with 227 recommendations. The Victorian Andrews Government has pledged a record breaking $1.9 billion in investment to implement all of the recommendations to prevent family violence and assist victims.

Fiona's legacy is a government where Ministers from different portfolios are all playing their part to prevent family violence.

Fiona demonstrated bravery, commitment and empathy in sharing her own story, but she never made it just about her. It merely underlined her genuine compassion and determination to make a difference to all of the other victims and survivors of domestic violence in Victoria, and indeed across this nation.

Fiona's leadership, commitment and bravery on these issues have been an ongoing inspiration to all.

We offer our most sincere condolences to Fiona's family and acknowledge the professionalism, dedication and support of Fiona's parliamentary colleagues and her team who supported her during her illness with grace and compassion. Much love and respect to you all.

Vale Fiona.
