MEDIA RELEASE - ROUNDABOUT CHANGE TO REDUCE CONGESTION IN OAK FLATS

Work is set to begin mid-next year on a new left turn lane on the roundabout at New Lake Entrance Road and Pioneer Drive to help reduce congestion around the Oak Flats interchange.

Recent traffic modelling work carried out by Transport for NSW revealed a new left turn lane on New Lake Entrance Road — on the southern approach to the roundabout — would help reduce queueing from the interchange to the roundabout and relieve congestion for motorists travelling into Shellharbour.

Design work is currently underway and construction of the new lane is expected to begin in the middle of 2024.

Additional solutions to deliver long-term improvements at the intersection site are being developed by Transport and more detail will be provided to the community when proposals are finalised.

Quotes attributable to Minister for Regional Transport and Roads Jenny Aitchison:

“Having just visited Shellharbour, I know how vital local infrastructure improvements like this are to help cut congestion and improve traffic flow in fast growing areas like this.”

“The Minns Labor Government understands communities want smoother, safer roads and I’m pleased to see Transport for NSW is taking action to address these issues in Oak Flats off the back of strong advocacy from Anna Watson.”

Quotes attributable to Parliamentary Secretary for Regional Transport and Roads Anna Watson:

“This is the first step in a program of work to improve overall network efficiency in Oak Flats.

“Transport for NSW carried out traffic modelling in response to the community’s concerns regarding queuing at the interchange and to address the large population growth in the area.

“While only a short-term measure, the new lane will be compatible with future long-term solutions currently being developed for this intersection.

“This work will provide benefits such as improved efficiency and reduced queueing for motorists approaching from the Old Princes Highway and the M1 Princes Motorway, while also maintaining active transport links for cyclists in this area.”
