Member for Maitland and Shadow Minister for the Prevention of Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault, Jenny Aitchison, has been overwhelmed by the local community support shown in the first week of Share the Dignity’s Christmas campaign ‘It’s in the Bag’.

‘It’s in the Bag’ is an initiative that encourages people to fill an old handbag they have at home with sanitary, beauty and hygiene products to be handed out as a special gift to local women in need this Christmas.

Historically the Christmas period sees a surge in domestic violence rates, and women often put themselves last at this time of year. The campaign is designed to give them a tangible sign that the community cares about them.

The campaign runs until Saturday 2 December so it’s not too late to drop off your donation to Ms Aitchison’s office at 34 Church Street Maitland.

Local residents have made over 120 donations during the first week of the campaign, including a massive donation by a local Facebook group Babes and Picnics.
