The NSW Labor Opposition has welcomed the lifting of regional travel restrictions from next month, but has urged the Berejiklian Government to deliver a strong marketing campaign and a comprehensive plan for tourism across NSW to provide clarity and appropriate health advice to both tourism operators and visitors.
Both visitors to our regions and tourism operators need to know that there is a clear plan which includes
-
A comprehensive marketing campaign funded by the NSW Government along with funding grants to help local businesses hit by bushfires, drought and COVID-19,
-
A dedicated line for operators to access government advice and support.
-
Resources for roadside services and rest stops to reopen and adhere to social distancing to support the influx of motorists.
-
Clear public transport information and clarity on social distancing and screening rules.
Shadow Minister for Investment and Tourism Jenny Aitchison said:
“A strong marketing campaign is desperately needed to provide industry certainty and help NSW compete with Queensland in the middle of winter.”
“The Berejiklian Government must totally reverse their $65 million cuts to Destination NSW. If they are serious about bringing jobs back, then they must bring that funding back.”
Shadow Minister for Rural Affairs Mick Veitch said: “I welcome the easing of travel restrictions in regional and rural NSW. Many of our regional communities have been doing it tough for so long.”
“For everyone to have confidence in the easing of these restrictions, the Premier must make sure the rules are clear for both tourists and tourism operators.”
Shadow Minister for Health Ryan Park said: “Our rural and regional health systems are already stretched to the limit.”
“Doctors and nurses have spoken out time and time again about the challenges they’re grappling with, they need assurances they will have the support and resources to cope with any cluster of COVID-19 cases.”
