Media Release - Morpeth Bridge Work Preparations Under Way

30 March 2020

Maitland MP Jenny Aitchison has welcomed news that preparations are under way to carry out important work on the nationally significant Morpeth Bridge.
“Morpeth Bridge, over the Hunter River at Morpeth, is one of Maitland’s most iconic sights,” Ms Aitchison said. “It is a renowned example of a timber trestle bridge with Allan trusses and is rightly listed on the NSW State Heritage Register.”
Work begins today on the site compound and maintenance work on the bridge will begin on Tuesday 14 April 2020. It is expected that works will take nine months to complete.
“The technical and historic elements of the Morpeth Bridge enshrine it as a structure of national significance and I’m pleased that Transport for NSW is working to continue its preservation and safe operation,” Ms Aitchison said.
From April 14, traffic controls will be in place plus a 40kmh speed limit. Part of the river will also be closed to marine traffic, due to works being conducted from a barge under the bridge, and aquatic vehicles will be restricted to four knots.
Transport for NSW has also advised that the bridge will be closed for a single night in June, and that more details will be forthcoming closer to the date.
“I’d like to take this opportunity to acknowledge that some motorists may experience delays during these important works,” Ms Aitchison said.
“Thank you for your patience.”
