MEDIA RELEASE - MAJOR MONARO PALERANG ROADS PACKAGE NOW COMPLETE

Road users travelling from Nerriga and Braidwood through Bungendore to Googong will now experience a smoother and more efficient journey with significant upgrades delivered under the Monaro Palerang Roads package, with the sealing of sections of Nerriga Road and upgrade to the Kings Highway intersection now complete.

Transport for NSW worked closely with Queanbeyan-Palerang Regional Council to carry out the $70 million package which included:

  • Safety improvements with vehicle separation on Old Cooma Road
  • Enhancements to pedestrian and cyclist connections with refuges at the new roundabout on the corner of Malbon Street and Molonglo Street on the Kings Highway at Bungendore
  • Sealing of four sections of Nerriga Road

Minister for Regional Transport & Roads Jenny Aitchison said:

“Motorists are enjoying improved travel times and less congestion with the duplication of Old Cooma Road, which has improved the alignment and capacity between Edwin Land Parkway and Googong Road.

“Since work began in 2018, the crews involved overcame many challenges presented by natural disasters and the pandemic. It is truly great to be able to finally celebrate this exciting milestone.”

Minister for Skills, TAFE and Tertiary Education & Member for Monaro Steve Whan said:

“It is not just motorists who will benefit from the upgrades, a 2.5 metre off-road shared path has also been provided for pedestrians and cyclists, linking Queanbeyan to Googong, as part of the Old Cooma Road duplication.

“Congratulations to the many workers who have devoted so much time and effort to completing the significant transformation of our local roads network and I acknowledge the efforts of former member John Barilaro in providing the initial funding for this work.”

Queanbeyan-Palerang Regional Council Mayor Kenrick Winchester said:

“Thanks to the NSW Government for their support in making these essential projects possible.

“All of these projects have made major improvements to our road and active transport networks, improving safety, congestion and travel times for so many local residents.”
