MEDIA RELEASE - LISMORE SCHOOLKIDS TO GET BETTER SHELTER AT BUS INTERCHANGE

The Lismore School Bus Interchange on the corner of Leycester and Hindmarsh streets is about to get a facelift with 10 replacement bus shelters planned for installation from late July.

Local school representatives raised concerns with Transport for NSW about a potential safety risk with the current shelters. Transport also received feedback from local bus operators that the shelters provided inadequate coverage for students, especially during wet weather.

Lismore City Council has agreed upon a design for the new shelters, which each include more than half a metre of additional overhead awning. The shelter walls will be made of perforated aluminium, increasing visibility and improving safety.

The NSW Government is funding the full $303,000 project cost, with all works to be completed outside of the interchange operating times to avoid any impacts on students or school bus services.

Transport and Council will continue discussions regarding the need for any additional shelters and investigations into further safety improvements including extension of Council’s existing CCTV network.

Minister for Regional Transport and Roads Jenny Aitchison said:

“Janelle Saffin has been a strong and fantastic advocate for safer school bus shelters for Lismore.

“It’s great to see the Labor Government delivering for the Lismore area.”

Member for Lismore Janelle Saffin said:

“Lismore students deserve to have a safe and dry place to wait for their school buses at the end of their school day.

“I’ve been advocating for improved safety measures and amenities at the interchange for five years.

“Local parents will also be grateful their children’s safety is being improved by the new design and ongoing investigations into CCTV.”

Lismore City Mayor Steve Krieg said:

“This is a great outcome for students who use this busy interchange.

“Not only will the new shelters provide better protection when it rains, it also improves safety as students wait for their buses.

“I would like to thank the Member of Lismore Janelle Saffin for her support with this project.”
