MEDIA RELEASE: GREEN LIGHT FOR MARSHALLS CREEK BRIDGE

Wagga Wagga motorists will experience safer and more efficient journeys along the Sturt Highway travelling across the city with plans to widen Marshalls Creek Bridge set to progress.

The NSW Government has listened to the local community and will reprioritise the Marshalls Creek Bridge upgrade over the Olympic Highway intersection upgrades.

The project will see the bridge widened to four lanes, providing an extra lane of traffic in each direction and improving efficiency for road users travelling to east Wagga Wagga, the city’s airport and the Hume Highway by achieving a consistent four lanes of traffic.

The wider bridge will also improve the safety of pedestrians and cyclists through a dedicated pedestrian path and shared path.

A $30 million roads package was announced by the former NSW Government in August 2018. The intent was to fund the widening of Marshalls Creek Bridge on the Sturt Highway and upgrade two intersections on the Olympic Highway in Wagga Wagga.

Due to the rising costs of construction both projects cannot be funded under this commitment.  The Olympic Highway intersection upgrades project will be put on hold until more funding is available.

Transport for NSW has completed detailed design and environmental assessments for the Marshalls Creek Bridge upgrade.

Further project planning will now be carried out with construction expected to start in about 18 months.

Minister for Regional Transport and Roads Jenny Aitchison said:

“The NSW Government has listened. We understand upgrades to Marshalls Creek Bridge are important to the community and that is why we will be pushing ahead with this project as a priority.

"This significant project will see the Sturt Highway widened to four lanes over Marshalls Creek Bridge, providing an additional lane of traffic in each direction.

“We will boost capacity of the highway by providing four continuous lanes through Wagga Wagga, improving access and travel efficiency for locals, visitors and freight travelling to east Wagga Wagga, the city’s airport and the Hume Highway.”

Member for Wagga Wagga Dr Joe McGirr said:

"The upgrades to Marshalls Creek Bridge will improve safety for all road users and ease congestion on the highway through Wagga Wagga.

“The widened bridge will provide both a dedicated footpath and shared path over Marshalls Creek to improve connectivity and safety for pedestrians and cyclists across the city of Wagga Wagga.”
