Safety improvements on the Golden Highway have delivered better road conditions for motorists at Cassilis with the completion of $1.6 million in upgrades.
The NSW Government’s Safer Roads Program has invested in these essential upgrades to reduce the risk and severity of crashes on this vital transport and freight route.
A 750-metre section of the highway has been improved by widening the highway to provide a left-turn lane into Cassilis Road, the installation of safety barriers, solar flag lighting at the intersection and signage to alert motorists of the curve.
Rumble strips have been installed along the edge and centrelines to reduce the risk of off-road and head-on crashes, with line marking also upgraded and vegetation cleared to improve sight distance for motorists.
Construction started on 8 April 2024 and was carried out by Upper Hunter Shire Council.
Minister for Regional Transport and Roads Jenny Aitchison said:
“The safety of all motorists across NSW is my highest priority, particularly in the regions.
“Our continued investment in the Safer Roads Program demonstrates this commitment to ensuring all road users complete their journeys safely, which is why this project will help around 2,000 motorists who use this section of road every day.
“Freight plays an essential role in the Hunter region’s economy and the Golden Highway helps connect coal mining, farming and other industries across the Hunter and Central West.”
NSW Duty MLC for Upper Hunter Emily Suvaal said:
“The Upper Hunter relies on its road network to connect its farming and mining communities, so it’s crucial the NSW Government works hard to ensure it’s as safe as possible.
“I’m pleased to see this safety upgrade project has been delivered on time to improve journeys for motorists and freight operators travelling to, from and around the Upper Hunter.
“We thank the motorists who use this stretch of road for their patience while the upgrade was completed.”
