Jenny Aitchison MP has welcomed the news that three Maitland primary schools and their communities will share in almost $300,000 in funding following the tally of the inaugural My Community Project votes.
Maitland residents voted for Metford Public School, Maitland Public School and St Aloysius Catholic Primary School Chisholm to receive funding for projects pitched in their My Community Project grant applications earlier this year.
“Each of these projects has the concepts of community and social connection at their core,” Ms Aitchison said. “This supports the physical and mental wellbeing of local children and their families.”
Metford Public School has been allocated $150,000 for a Community Play Space, designed to facilitate and encourage an active and healthy lifestyle while providing a place where members of the community can meet and engage.
Maitland Public School successfully applied for $95,000 to create an outdoor event space for performances and community events, and St Aloysius’s $50,000 to establish a plastic recycling station designed to convert any type of plastic into a useful everyday material.
Ms Aitchison said that Metford Public School had demonstrated true community spirit during the voting phase, turning a potential obstacle into an opportunity to connect and engage with members of the wider school body.
“The school saw an opportunity to help members of its community who didn’t have access to computers by making videos and flyers, and providing assistance to those who wished to register and vote.”
The inaugural My Community Project program attracted votes from more than 61,400 people across NSW. Results of the public vote are available online at mycommunityproject.service.nsw.gov.au.
Unsuccessful applicants have been contacted and provided with information about other NSW Government grant programs that may be applicable.
“I’d like to remind eligible community organisations that applications are open until 27 September for the 2019 Community Building Partnership grants program,” Ms Aitchison said.
