District Profile

The Maitland electorate was created in 1904, replacing East Maitland and West Maitland. With the introduction of proportional representation in 1920, it absorbed parts of Upper Hunter, Singleton, Cessnock and Durham and elected three members. With the end of proportional representation in 1927, Maitland was split into the single-member electorates of Maitland, Upper Hunter and Cessnock.

At the last NSW Election in 2023, 51,633 turned out to vote. Jenny Aitchison received 26,792 votes which was 51.89% of primary votes.

The Maitland electorate covers an area of 256 sq km and includes the suburbs of Aberglasslyn, Allandale, Anambah, Ashtonfield, Berry Park, Bishops Bridge, Chisholm, Cliftleigh, Duckenfield, East Maitland, Farley, Gillieston Heights, Gosforth, Greta, Harpers Hill, Horseshoe Bend, Lochinvar, Louth Park, Maitland, Metford, Millers Forest, Morpeth, Mount Dee, Oakhampton, Oakhampton Heights, Oswald, Pitnacree, Raworth, Rutherford, South Maitland, Telarah, Tenambit, Thornton, Windella, Windermere, Woodberry. Postcodes covered include 2320, 2321, 2322, 2323, 2324, 2326, 2334.

The Wonnarua people are the traditional land owners of the Maitland area and their lands extend throughout the Hunter Valley. A dreamtime story from the Wonnarua explains how the hills and rivers in the Hunter Valley were created by a spirit called Baiame.
